Abstract

A recent viral news story claiming that two hunters had contracted Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) from eating venison infected with chronic wasting disease (CWD) has caused panic among hunters and the public. However, experts have pointed out flaws in the research project that the story was based on, including the lack of scientific investigation and evidence linking CWD-infected venison to CJD. New scientific evidence suggests a strong species barrier that protects humans from contracting prion diseases from cervids like deer. Experts recommend having deer tested for CWD and not consuming meat from sick or unhealthy animals. [Extracted from the article]
