Abstract

This article discusses the research gaps in understanding and addressing loneliness among older migrants. While research on older migrants has gained momentum in recent years, there is still a lack of focus on this population, as most studies have predominantly focused on younger migrant populations. Quantitative studies consistently show that older migrants report higher levels of loneliness compared to their native-born counterparts. Factors such as cultural and linguistic distance, as well as limited social networks, contribute to higher levels of loneliness among older migrants. Addressing loneliness is crucial due to its negative impact on physical and mental health, as well as its consequences for society. The article highlights four main research gaps in understanding loneliness among older migrants: the need for more insight into the diversity within the group, the impact of environmental and societal factors, the development of tailored interventions, and the importance of breaking the silence on loneliness. Further research is needed to effectively address loneliness among older migrants and promote a more inclusive society. [Extracted from the article]
