Abstract

Sarawak, the largest state in Malaysia, is reclaiming control of its natural gas assets from federal government-run companies as part of its campaign for economic autonomy. Sarawak's oil firm, Petroleum Sarawak Bhd., has signed gas sale agreements and is taking over the gas distribution network in the state, which is currently controlled by Petroliam Nasional Bhd. (Petronas). Petronas, which answers to the prime minister, is requesting more time before ceding full control and wants to finalize gas supply agreements with Sarawak. This move towards autonomy began after the 2022 elections, as Sarawak's support is crucial for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's government coalition. [Extracted from the article]
