Abstract

Sarawak, the largest state in Malaysia, is taking control of its natural gas assets from federal government-run companies, marking a step towards economic autonomy. Sarawak's oil firm, Petroleum Sarawak Bhd., has signed gas sale agreements and is beginning to take over the gas distribution network in the state. The state has long sought higher oil and gas royalties from Petronas, the custodian of Malaysia's energy reserves, and the push for autonomy gained momentum after the 2022 elections. The move could lead to more negotiations between Sarawak and Petronas over revenue sharing and operational control. [Extracted from the article]
