Abstract

The live export trade in Australia, Brazil, and the United States is driven by corporate power dynamics, close relationships between governments and industry, and a lack of regulatory oversight. These factors contribute to the continuation of harmful practices in the meat industry, such as greenhouse gas emissions, resource degradation, worker exploitation, and animal mistreatment. The industry justifies live export as essential for global food security and economic interests, despite the excessive consumption of meat in many populations. To address these issues, a more holistic approach is needed, including changes in land ownership, agricultural subsidies, cultural attitudes, competition policy, and dietary guidelines.
