Abstract

Pharmaceutical companies face unique challenges in reducing their use of virgin plastic in packaging due to the need for safety features that make recycling difficult. However, supply chain partners are working together to find innovative solutions. For example, TekniPlex has developed a pharmaceutical-grade PET blister film with chemically recycled content that is fully recyclable. Additionally, Plastic Ingenuity has created thermoformed trays that can be easily collected and recycled. While Europe has implemented regulations requiring recyclable packaging with minimum recycled content, the United States still lacks comprehensive regulations for pharmaceutical packaging. However, there is growing pressure from consumers, investors, and policymakers for increased sustainability in the industry. [Extracted from the article]
