Abstract
- This article discusses a study on the physiological responses of European sardines to trace element contamination in the Mediterranean Sea. The study found evidence of multiple elements accumulating in sardines, with a contamination gradient within the Gulf of Lions. While macro-physiological parameters were not affected, pathways related to cellular organization, stress response, immune system, lipid homeostasis, and oxidative stress were upregulated in the liver. The study highlights the need for future research to examine the combined effects of multiple stressors, including large-scale contamination. [Extracted from the article]
