Abstract

Debate programs in public schools have been shown to have positive effects on students, particularly those from low-income backgrounds and students of color. Research indicates that participation in debate programs can improve reading scores, especially for students with low elementary school test scores. Debaters are also more likely to graduate high school within five years and enroll in a four-year college. These findings suggest that debate programs can be an effective strategy for improving literacy skills and educational attainment, particularly for disadvantaged students. Additionally, debate programs are cost-effective and could potentially be incorporated into regular classroom instruction to benefit all students. [Extracted from the article]
