Abstract
- After a lengthy trial, a Dublin jury has found that Dan Dowling and Edward Horgan had a "lawful excuse" when they entered Shannon Airport in Ireland and wrote anti-war graffiti on a U.S. Navy aircraft. The trial brought attention to the fact that Shannon Airport has been used by the CIA for its extraordinary rendition program, which violated Irish laws and international conventions. The defendants presented evidence, including a folder with the names of about 1,000 children who died in the Middle East, to support their argument that they were trying to prevent further atrocities. The jury accepted their arguments, and the defendants were given the benefit of the Probation Act on the charge of trespass, with the condition that they be "Bound to the Peace" for 12 months and make a significant donation to a charity in County Clare.
