Abstract

A recent report from the Royal Holloway University of London explores the factors that influence male prisoners' motivation for exercise and subsequent healthy behaviors. The study involved 20 semi-structured interviews with male prisoners in an English medium-security prison. The findings suggest that prisoners aspire to a masculine ideal that can either foster adaptive or maladaptive exercise cultures. The research emphasizes the importance of promoting an internal perceived locus of control for male prisoners when engaging in healthy behaviors. The study takes an interdisciplinary approach, combining psychological theories of motivation with criminological perspectives on prison culture. [Extracted from the article]
