Abstract

The ancient Western philosophy and the discourse surrounding Western theories of pleasure of human existence, has predominantly been shaped by male perspectives. Various expressions of 'Female Pleasure' are often either subjugated to the constraints of 'Male Pleasure' or marginalized due to concerns about their perceived adverse effects on the heterosexual societal framework. Conversely, in the contemporary cinematic landscape, there is ongoing experimentation with representational strategies of the female body, aimed at constructing visual narratives and aesthetics that convey the experience of female pleasure on screen. Lesbian cinema, in particular, provides a substantial opportunity to explore the multitudes of female pleasure beyond the confines of normative oedipal narratives of desire and pleasure. The objective of this paper aims to scrutinize the cinematic representational strategies related to eating through a critical feminist lens, exploring how they collectively shape a compelling spectacle of female pleasure and desire in the film Blue Is the Warmest Colour (2013).
