Abstract
- Organizations inevitably utilize external resources and knowledge to innovate fast and keep pace with new technology and market developments. A long-standing challenge for them is to 'protect' and 'profit' from innovation. While theory development on innovation and value concepts (i.e., value creation and value capture) continues, there remains a lack of definitional and conceptual agreements. Furthermore, despite the critical role that appropriability plays as knowledge permeates across organizational boundaries, extant scholarly work struggles to explain the overarching links with value processes. This study attempts to unify the studies on value creation and value capture using an appropriability lens. Further, this study exposes the difference between ex-ante and ex-post appropriability (as knowledge permeates organizational boundaries) and its relationship with a firm's open innovation capabilities. To address this research gap, the study proposes to conduct interviews with 'open innovation managers' to investigate the role of appropriability between value creation and value capture.
