Abstract

This paper investigates the discussions surrounding laryngeal cancer on Twitter. The study aims to identify the most frequently discussed topics, as well as the sentiments and emotions expressed in these conversations. It conducts a geospatial analysis to examine the geographic distribution of relevant tweets. The study explores the role of social media in disseminating information about laryngeal cancer and its potential impact on public health communication. To fulfil its objectives, the researchers compiled a dataset spanning 13 years, encompassing all tweets related to laryngeal cancer. This study examined 10,457 tweets using five distinct methods: to track temporal and spatial patterns, pinpoint prevalent discussion themes, gauge the sentiment of the text, and discern emotions expressed in these conversations. Results indicate that Twitter conversations predominantly revolve around recent research and literature, with limited discussions on diagnosis and outcomes. Tweet volume for laryngeal cancer is notably lower compared to breast and lung cancers, and overall sentiment tends to be positive. The absence of pronounced sentiments suggests organizational involvement over individual contributions. Notably, celebrities play a discernible role in drawing attention to the topic and sparking online conversations. The study concludes by considering the advantages and challenges of leveraging social media for public health communication, emphasizing the importance of promoting global awareness days or months for laryngeal cancer to encourage more individuals to share their experiences online.
