Abstract

A series of wildfires has broken out around Fort McMurray, Canada's unofficial oil-sands capital, posing a new threat to crude production in the region. Eight out-of-control fires have been discovered south and southwest of the city, in addition to three burning to the north where the main oil-sands mines are located. The fires are still outside the city's limits, but one fire to the northeast has led to a reduction in production at Suncor Energy Inc.'s oil-sands site. Despite the recent flare-up, Alberta is experiencing a milder wildfire season compared to last year. In Quebec, there are currently 74 fires burning, with extreme fire danger in the northern region. The wildfires in Alberta are also impacting gas output. [Extracted from the article]
