A study conducted by researchers at Sichuan University in Chengdu, People's Republic of China, compared the outcomes of two different cardioplegia solutions in a pig model of cardiopulmonary bypass. The study found that the solution containing natural blood and crystalloid, called "Huaxi-1," resulted in better outcomes compared to the entirely crystalloid solution. Animals given Huaxi-1 cardioplegia required less time to be weaned off bypass, received lower doses of norepinephrine, and showed higher levels of adenosine triphosphate and other biomarkers in the myocardium.
