Abstract

A new Code of Practice has been released for the use of stem cell-based embryo models (SCBEMs) in research. SCBEMs are three-dimensional structures created in the lab from stem cells that mimic aspects of early human embryo development. The Code sets out standards to ensure rigorous research, upholding ethical principles and maximizing potential benefits. It includes guidelines for decision-making, limits on the length of experiments, and prohibitions on transferring SCBEMs into a womb or allowing them to develop into viable organisms. The Code was developed by a working group of researchers and practitioners from various institutions in the UK, and it was informed by public dialogue to include public perspectives. While the Code is not legislative, it is expected to be widely adopted and set a new precedent for reporting research using SCBEMs. Regular reviews of the Code will be conducted to keep up with the evolving science.
