Abstract

A recent study conducted by the Institute of Archaeology in Belgrade, Serbia, aimed to shed light on the impact of animal management on the development of pathological changes in animal remains from the medieval site of Crkveno Brdo. The excavations at the site revealed animal remains with abnormalities, which were analyzed using macroscopic and stereomicroscope analysis, x-ray imaging, and histopathological analysis. The study found that dental and oral pathology were the most prevalent lesions in cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs, while articular abnormalities were most common in horses. The researchers attributed dental pathologies to malnutrition quality and articular abnormalities to aging and environmental factors, possibly related to work. [Extracted from the article]
