Abstract

A report from University Hospital Brno in the Czech Republic discusses the development of autonomic heart rate control during childhood and adolescence. The study involved recording electrocardiograms in 1045 healthy children and adolescents aged 4 to 19 years during different positions. The researchers found that heart rate decreases with age in both sexes, but the decreases are lower in females than in males. They also observed that the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system is less responsive to vagal influence in younger children. The study suggests that while vagal influences modulate cardiac periods equally in young and older children, they are less able to suppress sympathetic influence in younger children.
