Abstract

A recent study conducted at the University of Rochester found that older adults with cancer have varying levels of awareness about their prognosis. The study aimed to identify factors associated with poor prognostic awareness in this population. The researchers provided questionnaires to 257 older cancer patients, asking them to estimate their life expectancy. The study found that approximately two-thirds of the patients had poor prognostic awareness, and factors such as older age, race other than White, unwillingness to discuss prognosis, and stage I-III cancer were associated with higher odds of poor prognostic awareness. The researchers suggest that interventions to improve prognostic awareness should consider patients' willingness to discuss prognosis. [Extracted from the article]
