Abstract

This article discusses the importance of business continuity strategies in navigating natural disasters. It highlights that more than half of businesses in the United States do not have a disaster recovery plan, and one in four businesses that close temporarily due to a disaster will never reopen. The article emphasizes the need for property owners and facility managers to develop a continuity plan tailored to their business, which can guide actions to minimize disruption during and after a natural disaster. It also provides guidance on understanding risks, assessing vulnerabilities, developing a robust continuity plan, crisis communication, protecting the building, and building a culture of preparedness and training. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of regularly updating and testing continuity plans to minimize disruption to facilities and operations in the aftermath of natural disasters.
