Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at Democritus University of Thrace focused on the development of a blood-based epigenetic biosignature for diagnosing schizophrenia. The researchers used an automated machine learning approach to analyze genome-wide DNA methylation datasets and identify specific biomarkers associated with schizophrenia. They then validated these biomarkers in a group of first-episode drug-naive schizophrenia patients and healthy controls. The study found that a combination of three novel genes, along with age and sex, could effectively discriminate between schizophrenia patients and healthy individuals. This research offers promising potential for the development of blood-based diagnostics for schizophrenia. [Extracted from the article]
