Abstract
- A recent study from Keele University explores the development of a biomimetic hydrogel that mimics the neointimal layer of atherosclerotic plaques. The hydrogel was created by culturing foam cells within collagen hydrogels, with and without atorvastatin. The researchers found that the hydrogel was able to trigger platelet aggregation and blood coagulation when exposed to human blood. Atorvastatin treatment reduced the pro-aggregatory and pro-coagulant properties of the hydrogel. The study suggests that this biomimetic hydrogel could be used to study atherosclerosis development and screen anti-thrombotic drugs in an in vitro model. [Extracted from the article]
