Abstract

A new report from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in Iran discusses the development of biomimetic scaffolds for the regeneration of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc. The TMJ disc is often responsible for TMJ diseases, and current treatments are usually short-term and palliative. The study reviews the fabrication of scaffolds using decellularized tissues, natural and synthetic biomaterials, and compares their properties. The research concludes that both natural and synthetic scaffolds show promise in achieving the functional, structural, biological, and mechanical properties of a native TMJ disc.
