Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at University College London (UCL) has provided new insights into rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The study focused on CD19, a co-receptor of the B cell receptor, and its role in B cell activation, metabolism, and function. The researchers found that CD19(hi) B cells, which are predominantly composed of double negative and memory subpopulations, displayed higher proliferation, metabolism, and cytokine expression compared to CD19(lo) B cells. These findings suggest that CD19(hi) cells may play a role in promoting inflammation and could be targeted in autoimmune diseases using emerging therapies such as CAR-T cells and T cell engagers.
