Abstract

Lillian O'Neil's artistic assemblages explore the concept of matrescence, the transformative period of becoming a mother. Using collage, O'Neil creates multi-layered images sourced from vintage books and magazines, often depicting the female body in architecture, mythology, and historical accounts of childbirth. Her work reflects the physical and emotional upheaval of early motherhood, conveying feelings of vulnerability, containment, and the sense of merging with the domestic environment. O'Neil's exhibition, titled "The light that spills across the ground between shadows," sheds light on the challenging yet joyous experience of motherhood. [Extracted from the article]
