Abstract
- This article discusses the manumission of Monimia Travers, an enslaved woman who traveled along the Oregon Trail to Oregon City with Captain Lewelyn Jones and his family. The article compares different versions of the manumission document and provides corrections and additional information about Travers's journey and time in Oregon. It highlights the importance of examining primary documents for accurate historical research. The text also provides information about Travers's time in Oregon City and the challenges faced by the community during that period. It mentions the possibility of Travers finding community among the few other Black people living in Oregon City. The article also discusses Travers's presence in the Jones household and the uncertainty surrounding her freedom status in Oregon.
