Abstract

This article discusses the field of pragmatics and its role in understanding language use in online settings. It highlights various pragmatic phenomena that have been studied in online discourse, such as face, (im)politeness, the moral order, identity construction, and humor. The article also explores the micro-level analysis of online interaction, focusing on sequential organization, turn-taking, repair, and categorial work. It introduces a special issue of Internet Pragmatics that examines how social action is constructed in online interactions, using examples from platforms like Tinder, YouTube, and Facebook. The papers in the special issue explore topics such as offline and online communities, joint fantasizing, public denunciation, and the co-construction of social action. Overall, the article demonstrates how a micro-level analysis of online interaction can provide a nuanced understanding of meaning construction in digital discourse. [Extracted from the article]
