Abstract

A recent study conducted by the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine investigated the uptake of technetium-99 by food crops in the Chornobyl Exclusion zone. The researchers found that the type of soil had little effect on the uptake of technetium by plants in the first two years after contamination. However, after 8-9 years, the uptake of technetium by wheat decreased significantly. The study concluded that approximately half of the added technetium was removed from the soil within 2-3 years due to vertical migration and transfer to plants. This research provides valuable insights into the environmental impact of radioactive elements on food crops. [Extracted from the article]
