Abstract

The Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart is hosting a major exhibition called NAMEDROPPING, which explores the reasons why humans create and collect art. The exhibition features around 200 artworks and objects from the museum's collection, as well as loans from other collections. The curators argue that status is biologically advantageous and that creativity and art-making have helped humans survive and reproduce. The exhibition also examines the role of collecting in finding one's tribe and the constant human preoccupation with status. The show includes works by famous artists such as David Bowie, Ai Weiwei, and Vincent Namatjira, as well as pieces that derive their meaning and status from other objects. The exhibition encourages collectors to reflect on their motives and the value they place on objects. [Extracted from the article]
