Abstract

This article explores the issue of teacher attrition and the need for systemic change to address the challenges faced by teachers, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. It highlights the lack of diversity in the teacher workforce and the inequities in working conditions that contribute to high turnover rates. The article emphasizes the importance of reprofessionalizing and rehumanizing teaching to make it a more sustainable profession. It discusses the disrespect and challenges faced by educators, including their mental and physical health, and the lack of support from administrators. The article also addresses the low pay, stress, and lack of recognition that teachers experience, and calls for listening to teachers and elevating their voices in research and policy discussions. It suggests that teacher educators can help prepare teachers for the realities of the field and support them in navigating institutional challenges, and calls for educational leaders to implement systemic solutions that value and support both students and educators.
