Abstract

A study conducted by researchers at Helmholtz Munich has found that a father's diet before conception can influence the health of their children. The study focused on small RNA molecules in sperm called mitochondrial tRNA fragments (mt-tsRNAs), which play a role in regulating gene expression and the inheritance of health traits. The researchers used data from over 3,000 families and found that the father's body weight independently influences the weight of the children and their susceptibility to metabolic diseases. Experiments with mice also showed that a high-fat diet in fathers led to offspring with an increased tendency for metabolic diseases. The findings suggest that preventive health care for men wishing to become fathers should focus on diet to reduce the risk of diseases like obesity and diabetes in children.
