Abstract

Kansai Electric Power Co. is planning to issue transition bonds to finance nuclear power projects in Japan. The utility company intends to sell approximately ¥30 billion ($191 million) of transition notes in two tranches in July. The funds raised will be used to invest in carbon-neutral projects, including nuclear power and zero-carbon thermal power projects. The issuance of transition bonds in Japan has increased following the government's issuance of such debt earlier this year, which is seen as a way to gradually achieve climate goals for an industrialized nation like Japan. However, these bonds have faced skepticism abroad as they do not typically finance specific environmental projects like green bonds do. [Extracted from the article]
