Abstract

A bill has been introduced in New York City to increase the city's composting capacity by requiring the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) to establish at least one organic waste composting facility in each borough by 2027. Currently, only 20% of the food scraps and yard waste collected by the city are turned into compost, with the rest being used as fuel for heating. While converting organic waste into energy is better than sending it to landfills, it still has environmental drawbacks, such as emitting greenhouse gases and potentially leaking methane. Environmental advocates support the bill, especially since the city's community composting program has been defunded. [Extracted from the article]
