Abstract

The UK's power grid is expected to have a larger buffer against potential shortages this winter, reducing the need for backup supplies. Supply margins are set to widen to 9.4%, thanks to an increase in interconnectors that import power from neighboring countries. The average demand during peak cold spells is expected to be slightly lower than last year. However, the grid operator warns of uncertainties in global energy markets, particularly related to natural gas prices. The forecast provides some relief as the UK recovers from an energy crisis, but prices remain high due to geopolitical risks. A significant portion of the UK's power capacity for winter comes from gas and nuclear plants. The National Grid also ran a program last winter to incentivize households to reduce power use. While the situation is expected to improve, there may still be some tight days where system notices are used. [Extracted from the article]
