Abstract

A recent study conducted at the University of Central Florida has examined the case of a 45-year-old male with neurosarcoidosis, a rare manifestation of sarcoidosis that affects the respiratory and lymphatic systems. The patient presented with symptoms of sinus congestion, dysphagia, and left lower motor neuron facial palsy. After various tests and evaluations, the patient was diagnosed with sarcoidosis and treated with mycophenolate mofetil and oral steroids, which led to improvement in symptoms. However, the patient also developed left shoulder pain and winging of the left scapula, which prompted further investigation and the prescription of the anti-tumor necrosis factor alpha inhibitor infliximab. Subsequent MRI scans showed resolution of the lesions, indicating a positive response to infliximab therapy. This case highlights the unusual co-occurrence of Bell's palsy and vocal cord palsy in the same patient, as well as the potential contribution of neurosarcoidosis to winged scapula. The study suggests that infliximab therapy can be effective in addressing the multifaceted challenges of neurosarcoidosis. [Extracted from the article]
