Abstract

A recent report from the University of Nebraska Medical Center discusses research on epilepsy and the localization of eloquent cortices, which is important for neurosurgical applications such as epilepsy and tumor resections. The researchers propose a method to post-process distributed source localization results to identify the area and boundary of the cortical tissue that primarily activates in response to somatosensory stimulation. The algorithm successfully localized somatosensory responses on the cortical surface in anatomically appropriate regions, reducing subjectivity associated with dipole localization. The research concludes that the algorithm is not inferior to dipole localization and provides additional pre-surgical information on the location and spatial distribution of eloquent cortical areas.
