Abstract

A recent report from Tampere University in Finland highlights the challenges of understanding and acting upon risk, particularly in complex and uncertain environments. The researchers argue that relying on understandings developed for stable environments can create a false sense of safety and expose systems to extreme risks. They propose a framework using attractor landscapes to visualize and interpret complex system dynamics, which can help identify blindspots in decision-making and develop contextually interpreted risk mitigation plans. The main practical contribution of this research is to clarify when to emphasize particular strategies, such as optimization, risk mitigation, exploration, or stabilization, to enhance system resilience and mitigate extreme risks.
