Abstract

A recent study conducted by researchers at Maltepe University examined the levels of oxidatively-induced DNA damage and base excision repair (BER) mechanisms in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) and their siblings. The study found that both individuals with BD and their unaffected siblings exhibited similar abnormalities in DNA damage and BER, suggesting a familial susceptibility to BD. The findings indicate that targeting the oxidatively-induced DNA damage and BER pathway could be a promising therapeutic strategy for reducing the risk of age-related diseases and comorbidities in individuals with a genetic predisposition to BD.
