Abstract

This article discusses the decolonization of trans-affirming language in Aotearoa (New Zealand). The author, a Pākehā (non-Māori of European origin), cisgender, and queer sociolinguist and activist, highlights the issues associated with using Western-origin terms to refer to groups with experiences of colonization. They also address the challenge of de-centering whiteness in trans-affirming spaces and the rise of Indigenous efforts to decolonize language and gender. The article emphasizes the importance of including Indigenous and non-white perspectives in research on language and gender and calls for the decolonization of trans-affirming language.
