Abstract

This article discusses the evolution of portable audio, focusing on the development of different formats and technologies. It begins by highlighting the invention of fast-erase floating-gate memory by Toshiba electrical engineer Fujio Masuoka, which led to the development of the world's first practical no-moving-parts data storage device. The article then explores the introduction of formats such as Digital Audio Tape (DAT), Digital Compact Cassette (DCC), and MiniDisc, as well as the rise of CD ripping and the launch of iTunes and the iPod. It concludes by mentioning the decline of the portable music player market and the emergence of new devices. [Extracted from the article]
