Abstract

The article discusses initiatives in Africa that support university students in gaining STEM skills and experience to prepare them for graduate school in the US and other countries. One such initiative is the Pan-African School for Emerging Astronomers (PASEA), which offers a week-long course to help African students develop their STEM skills and learn about careers in astronomy. PASEA has been held in Nigeria, Ghana, Zambia, and will be held in Tunisia in September 2024. The program has almost 300 alumni from 20 African countries, with many continuing in STEM fields. However, these students face barriers in navigating the graduate school application process, and the authors are seeking funding to create a mentorship program to support them.
