Abstract

The Power Division in Pakistan has informed the IMF about the heavy taxation burden on electric power consumers, which leads to increased tariffs. They suggested reducing the taxation burden by Rs100-200 billion annually, which could provide relief of Rs1-2 per unit. However, the 17% General Sales Tax (GST) cannot be removed. The Power Division also proposed converting power plants to local Thar coal and replacing the net metering system with gross metering to improve efficiency and reduce tariffs.
