Abstract
- A study conducted at University Hospital Santiago in La Coruna, Spain, has found that a very-low-calorie ketogenic diet (VLCKD) can normalize obesity-related elevated levels of erythropoietin (EPO). The study compared the effects of the VLCKD with a low-calorie diet (LCD) and bariatric surgery (BS) on EPO levels in patients with obesity. The results showed that the VLCKD led to a decrease in EPO levels during maximum ketosis, while no significant changes were observed with the LCD or BS. The researchers suggest that baseline EPO levels could serve as a biomarker for response to weight-loss therapies. [Extracted from the article]
