Researchers at Wenzhou Medical University in Zhejiang, China have developed a new strategy to overcome drug resistance in the treatment of anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC). The researchers prepared alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan (ALG/CMC) microspheres loaded with doxorubicin and docetaxel, which enhanced cellular uptake and inhibited drug efflux. The microspheres showed significant inhibition of drug-resistant ATC cells in vitro and suppressed tumor growth in vivo. The researchers concluded that the improved therapeutic efficacy may be attributed to the enhanced drug uptake and reduced drug efflux facilitated by the ALG/CMC microspheres.
