Abstract

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Pisa in Italy explores the use of biomarkers in addressing cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs), which include conditions such as arterial hypertension, type 2 diabetes, heart failure, coronary artery disease, and stroke. The researchers emphasize the need for innovative diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to manage CMDs due to their increasing prevalence and associated cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. They suggest that techniques such as epicardial adipose tissue evaluation, ventricular-arterial coupling, exercise tolerance studies, and epigenetic changes involving noncoding RNAs and chromatin modulation could serve as both biomarkers and targets for CMDs. However, they acknowledge the challenges in translating these findings into clinical practice and call for further investigation into the complex pathophysiology underlying CMDs.
