Abstract

A new study conducted by researchers at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) has found that increased risk for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is influenced by various factors, including hepatitis viral infection and dietary exposure to aflatoxin-producing molds. The study focused on the role of the DNA glycosylase NEIL1 in repairing AFB1-Fapy-dG adducts, which are highly mutagenic and can lead to HCC. The research found that NEIL1 deficiency increased AFB1-induced mutagenesis and ultimately carcinogenesis in male mice. These findings highlight the critical role of NEIL1 in limiting AFB1-induced mutagenesis and provide insights into the mechanisms underlying HCC development. [Extracted from the article]
