Abstract

A recent study conducted by investigators at Erasme University Hospital in Brussels, Belgium, explored the relationship between nutrition and mental health in children and adolescents. The researchers reviewed meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials and observational studies to assess the efficacy of dietary patterns and nutrient supplements in preventing and treating mental disorders. The findings suggest that omega-3 and Vitamin D may have additional benefits in treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), while no evidence was found for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Healthy dietary patterns were associated with a reduced risk of internalizing and externalizing disorders, while unhealthy dietary habits were linked to an elevated risk. However, more research is needed to establish clear causal relationships and to conduct larger-scale trials to confirm the observed benefits of nutrient supplements. [Extracted from the article]
