Abstract
- The NCAA and its five most powerful conferences have agreed to a proposed settlement of a class-action suit that pays $2.8 billion to college athletes from past years and allows each Division I school to pay athletes about $20 million a year in the future. This move acknowledges that college sports have not been truly amateur for decades. However, critics argue that the settlement was negotiated in secret with the Power 5 conferences, leaving smaller leagues at a disadvantage. Some believe that the $2.8 billion can be seen as reparations for the young Black male athletes who have contributed to the billion-dollar athletic-industrial complex without receiving fair compensation. While there may be casualties in nonrevenue and women's sports, college sports have long been a business rather than a purely amateur endeavor. [Extracted from the article]
