Abstract

The article discusses the need for reform in the curriculum and assessment system in England. It acknowledges the successes of the current system, such as improvements in international rankings and the emphasis on academic rigor. However, it also highlights the drawbacks, including a lack of breadth in subject choices, a focus on academic subjects at the expense of technical and vocational learning, and issues with literacy and numeracy skills. The article suggests that significant reforms are needed to address these limitations while also recognizing the commendable features of the current system. It proposes gradual changes, such as national online tests and a four-year "Baccalaureate" program, to give students and teachers more time and reduce pressures. [Extracted from the article]
