Abstract

This article examines the representation of women in the field of economics and the increase in gender-related research. While progress has been made, women's representation has stagnated since 2005. The study finds that women are more likely to pursue gender-related research, which has expanded the scope of economic research and is driven by both men and women. The article also discusses the distribution of gender-related research across different fields of economics, showing that the share of dissertations on gender topics has significantly increased from 1991 to 2021. However, the share of women earning PhDs in economics has plateaued at one-third, indicating ongoing barriers to gender equity in the profession. The study suggests that future research should collect self-reported demographic data to better understand the relationship between diversity and knowledge creation. [Extracted from the article]
